Hospital Blaze Claims Five Lives, Injures Many in Eastern India

(MENAFN) At least five people were killed and 20 others injured after a fire broke out inside an intensive care unit (ICU) at a private hospital in India’s Bihar state early Thursday, according to reports.

A senior administrative official confirmed the fatalities, while warning that the death toll could rise as several of the injured remain in critical condition.

The hospital, located in Muzaffarpur district, was hit by the blaze around 03:55 a.m. local time, according to the local fire department. At the time, 13 patients were inside the ICU, and others in nearby wards were also affected by the fire.

Firefighters managed to evacuate nearly 20 patients from the building, who were later transferred to other hospitals for treatment.

Reports said the fire is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, though investigations are still ongoing.
