Egyptian archaeologists uncover three ancient rock-cut tombs
Mohamed Ismail Khaled, secretary-general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), indicated that some tombs appear to have been reused during the Middle Kingdom (2055–1650 BC), underscoring Qubbet el-Hawa’s long-standing significance as a burial site through various eras.
The discovery offers fresh insights into the transitional period between the end of the Old Kingdom and the beginning of the First Intermediate Period. Notably, some tombs lacked inscriptions but retained traditional burial architecture and practices, possibly reflecting economic constraints of the time.
Mohamed Abdel-Badie, head of the SCA’s Egyptian Antiquities Sector, explained that two tombs shared similar features, containing offering tables, pottery vessels, wooden coffins, and skeletal remains. The third tomb had a distinct design and housed a large collection of well-preserved pottery alongside remains of both adults and children.
Located on the west bank of the Nile opposite Aswan, Qubbet el-Hawa is renowned for its rock-cut tombs of nobles and officials spanning multiple dynasties. The ministry emphasized that this discovery reinforces the site’s archaeological importance in southern Egypt and provides valuable knowledge about burial customs and tomb architecture during key transitional phases of ancient Egyptian history.
