Trump claims Iran, Israel agreed to ceasefire
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced on Monday evening that Iran and Israel have reached an agreement to implement a ceasefire. This statement came just hours after Iran launched missile strikes on a US military base in Qatar, in retaliation for recent American attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that a “Complete and Total CEASEFIRE” would begin in about six hours, lasting for 12 hours, after which the war would be declared over. According to his timeline, Iran would initiate the ceasefire, followed by Israel after 12 hours, leading to a formal end to what he referred to as “THE 12 DAY WAR.” He praised both nations for their “stamina, courage, and intelligence” in ending the conflict.
However, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied that a formal ceasefire agreement had been made, though he said Iran would halt its attacks if Israel stopped theirs by 4 a.m. Tehran time (12:30 a.m. GMT).
The conflict began on June 13 when Israel launched strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites and targeted senior Iranian commanders and scientists. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the operation was intended to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Iran, which denies pursuing a military nuclear program, retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israel. On June 22, US forces targeted Iranian nuclear sites, including uranium enrichment plants in Natanz and Fordow, prompting Iran to respond by firing missiles at the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar the next day.
