US Defends Attacking Iran as Security Measure
“This mission was not and has not been about regime change,” Hegseth stated during a press conference held jointly with Air Force General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
His statement followed President Donald Trump's announcement that American forces had conducted “very successful” assaults on three of Iran’s nuclear locations situated in Fordo, Natanz, and Esfahan.
The operations took place amid intensifying concerns over the potential for a wider regional conflict.
Hegseth explained that Trump had authorized a “precision operation to neutralize the threats to our national interests posed by the Iranian nuclear program and the collective self-defense of our troops and our ally Israel.”
He noted that the campaign required “months and weeks of positioning and preparation” to ensure readiness for when the President gave the green light.
Emphasizing the outcome of the operation, Hegseth described the strikes on Iran as an “incredible and overwhelming success,” adding: “We devastated the Iranian nuclear program.”
