Rubio Calls on Syrian Government to Halt Violence

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio appealed to the Syrian authorities on Saturday to deploy security forces in the southern region to "immediately" halt the clashes between Druze and Bedouin factions and to stop further brutal acts.

Rubio emphasized that if the Damascus government wants to maintain any hope of creating a unified, inclusive, and peaceful Syria free from ISIS (Daesh) and Iranian influence, it must assist in ending this disaster.

This can be achieved by using their security forces to block ISIS and other militant jihadists from infiltrating the area and perpetrating massacres, Rubio stated on X.

He noted that Washington has been “heavily involved” over the past three days in working alongside Israel, Jordan, and Syrian officials in Damascus to manage the “horrifying and dangerous developments” in Suwayda province in the south.

“The rape and slaughter of innocent people which has and is still occuring (sic) must end,” Rubio declared, further urging Damascus to “hold accountable and bring to justice anyone guilty of atrocities including those in their own ranks.”

Hostilities erupted on July 13 between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze groups in Suwayda.

The violence intensified, leading to Israeli airstrikes targeting Syrian military sites and infrastructure in Damascus. Israel justified these strikes by claiming a need to defend Druze communities.

On Saturday, the Syrian presidency announced a broad and immediate ceasefire after several days of turmoil in the southern province, according to news agencies.
