Tourist vessel overturns in Vietnam killing thirty-seven people

(MENAFN) A tourist boat carrying 53 passengers capsized in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay on Saturday during a sudden storm, leaving at least 37 people dead and several still missing. The vessel, Wonder Seas, encountered severe weather including hail, heavy rain, and lightning, according to Vietnamese naval and border guard officials.

Most of the victims were Vietnamese families visiting from Hanoi. Despite challenging weather, rescue teams have pulled 11 people from the water alive. Among the survivors was a 10-year-old boy rescued from an air pocket inside the overturned boat. He recounted diving underwater and shouting for help before being pulled to safety.

Search efforts are ongoing, but heavy rain continues to hinder rescue operations. Local reports confirm that at least eight of the deceased were children.
