Kyiv proposes new stages of peace talks

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced on Saturday that Kyiv has proposed holding a new round of peace negotiations with Russia next week. The offer was extended by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), who has led Ukraine’s delegation in past talks.

A member of Russia’s negotiating team confirmed to a news agency that the proposal had been received. The two sides have already met twice this year in Istanbul, where they exchanged draft peace proposals and agreed to further prisoner swaps.

Zelensky emphasized the urgency of diplomacy in his evening address, saying, “The pace of negotiations must be increased. Everything must be done to achieve a ceasefire.”

At the most recent talks in June, Moscow proposed a conditional truce, requiring Ukraine to halt its intake of Western military aid and take steps to deescalate. Kyiv rejected the offer.

Russian President Vladimir Putin later accused Ukraine of using the negotiations as a tactic to regroup and rearm. The Kremlin has also warned it would not tolerate any NATO presence in Ukraine, including under the guise of peacekeepers.
